Getty Museum Aug. 5, 2012
Eleven members and friends met at the Federal Building parking lot at 10:00 am on Sunday, to car pool to the parking structure. After taking the shuttle up to the museum we gathered at the Plasa Level Restaurant to coordinate activities. Leader Dorothy Juarez had planned a route of discovery from which we could choose our goals for exploring the exhibits. New member Yvette Jaeger and her friend Roxanne took a guided tour and we didnt' see them again until 3 pm. The Museum was crowded with many vacationing world travelers speeking many foreign languages. Not to be missed was the major loan exhibition of driwings by gustav Klimt (1862-1918), "The magic of Line" Another temporary display was "The Vexed Man", one of a group of astonishing "character heads" produced by sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (1736-1783). In between our explorations, most gathered for a group lunch at The Garden Terrace. Thanks to Dorothy for suggesting and leading this very enjoyable outing.

For all of us, great memories of backpacks horse pack trips etc. where relived by this special few days in the sierras. Many thanks from the leader for everyone's participation and enthusiasm, and thanks to the "weather gods" for perfect hiking days.

Carbon Canyon Regional Park
Over Sixty CEC members and friends gathered at our usual Ramada #9 for hikes, games and the annual picnic feast organized by Bruno Geiger. The age spead of the participants ranged from four years to over ninety, and included one dog. The bird-watching group on nine led by Barbara Reber spotted several interesting species including an acorn woodpecker and mountain bluebirds. Thirteen joined Maury Whitaker and Cherry Postic for a three-mile hike to the Pinewood Grove Nature Reserve and the Redwood forest, each at opposite ends of the park. Lynn Williams coordinated the croquet competition with prizes won by Gary Fourer and Ret Moore. At 1 p.m. the feast was ready. Bruno barbecued the German Sausages, served on eight-inch special buns brought by Betty Krantz. Accompaniments were roasted corn-on-the-cob. Boston baked beans, cole slaw, an array of soft drinks, and watermelon for dessert. And there was plenty for all. Follwing the meal there was ample time for renewing friendships, reminiscing, and planning. Thanks to the picnic committee and especially Bruno for executing another successful picnic in the park - by Eugenia Hathaway

West Side Bike Ride
Summer is here and many of our CEC bikes riders are off already on trips and adventures. We had a very small group today, only nine people. We had the typical june weather: overcast and cloudy. Great for bike trail. It has not been swept in several days. Hope this is a temporary condition and that they get the sweeper out soon. It was great to have Paul Schumaker join us for this last ride before our summer break. We will be off July and August. This gives people time for trips, and the bike trail is crowded in the summer. We had a very pleasant ride and a wonderful lunch at Cafe Mylan. -Leader: M.J. McMaster
